Becoming and becoming is a philosophical enquiry into in-betweenness in relation to cultural identity. The dramatic sequence of moving clouds was filmed from an airplane seat when the artist was flying from Taipei to London, from her country of birth to home of choice. It became clear to her that the physical position of being in between the two homes measured the distance of being in diaspora. In response to the ever-shifting scenery, the work explores the correlation between the impossibility to locate oneself mid-air on a flight and the impossibility to locate a constantly evolving diasporic identity. Across the film, the artist narrates her poetic text of excerpts from Stuart Hall’s writing on identity and Buddhist concepts of the nature of mind and non-duality. Defying an either-or inclination, in-betweenness is a place of changing, burgeoning and becoming rather than a void or nothing.
